The Tradition

Bharatanatyam

Bha · Ra · Ta · Natyam

One of the oldest classical dance forms of India, Bharatanatyam originated in the temples of Tamil Nadu over two thousand years ago. Its name unites bhava (expression), raga (melody), tala (rhythm), and natyam (dance). The form weaves together pure rhythmic movement (nritta), expressive gesture (nritya), and dramatic storytelling (natya), guided by principles set down in the ancient Natya Shastra.

Arangetram

Ascending the Stage

From the Tamil arangu (stage) and etram (ascent), an Arangetram is the formal solo debut of a Bharatanatyam dancer — the culmination of years of rigorous training under a guru and the threshold of a lifelong relationship with the art. For the first time, the dancer presents the complete traditional repertoire — the margam — before an audience, offering the fruits of practice to the divine, the guru, and the gathered community.

Tonight she presents her Arangetram — her formal debut on the concert stage — a milestone that marks not an end, but the beginning of a lifelong relationship with the art.
